Potential project area : Work-based learning

Work-based learning is a key point of differentiation for many of our programmes – often foundation degrees, but also masters degrees, such as the Media School’s MA Creative Media Practice. If you have any experiences of how we can develop good practice in the area of work-based learning, encouraging independent learning, or if you are interested in taking others’ experiences in this area into your school, please add an entry to this post , ideally leaving your contact details.

Potential project area : Leveraging placement experiences

Placements are one of the (many) things we do well. We all know how valuable the placement experience is in developing employability. But do we all make the most of the students’ experiences of placement in the following (often final) year of their study ? If you have any experiences of how we can maximise the benefits of the placement experience to support independent learning once students return to University, or if you are interested in taking others’ experiences in this area into your school, please add an entry to this post , ideally leaving your contact details.

Potential project area : Engaging alumni in education

One of the issues raised at the ‘Town Hall’ meetings, was the opportunity we have to embrace our alumni as part of our educational community. There may be an opportunity to better integrate the experiences of our alumni into our learning with the aim of enhancing the student experience and developing their skills of independent learning ( again , learning from learners). If you have experiences of how we can integrate alumni within the learning experience, or if you are interested in taking others’ experiences in this area into your school, please add an entry to this post , ideally leaving your contact details.

Potential project area : Developing creativity

All students can benefit from the development of their creativity. Previous work in this area has been disseminated through the Learning and Teaching conferences . If you think that there would be an opportunity to take these experiences into your school, add an entry to this post, ideally leaving your contact details

Potential project area : Collaborative Learning

Learning from learners is at the heart of the University’s Strategic plan. Students clearly play a key role within this approach to learning. Structuring our curriculum and learning opportunities in a way which allows students with different skills to work collaboratively , learning from each other , provides a great way to enhance the student experience and develop the skills of independent learning. The Media School has developed a level C summer project in which students from three programmes BA (Hons ) Television Production, BA (Hons) Scriptwriting and BA (Hons) Interactive Media Production work together to share skills and produce integrated media content. Student feedback has been positive; staff are focused on problem-solving . If you are interested in being part of a team taking this approach into your school , add an entry to this post , ideally leaving your contact details.

Potential project area : Dissertation Support

Most of our students are asked to engage in the production of a dissertation supported by one to one tutorials. This project would look at how we can augment the learning environment , providing more opportunities for students to learn from each other, for example in learning sets linked to their chosen topic or research methodology. Also we would look spreading innovative practice in the form of online tools such as ‘Biblipedia’ an online group blog about books which allows students and staff to share their ideas about the texts they have read. Enhancements in virtual learning environment may allow us to reduce the time spent in one to one tutorial support.

If you would like to share in the practice developing in the Media School and IBAL then add an entry to this post ideally leaving your contact details .

Potential Project Ideas

This Releasing Potential project seeks to identify a small number of examples of best practice or innovative practice within schools and to provide the mechanisms to transfer such good practice initially to another school , but with the potential in the longer term , more broadly across the University.

The following blog entries identify six potential project areas. Some are more clearly defined than others. The first couple of are examples of learning and teaching initiatives which are already active within schools; the following four are more loosely defined, but represent areas which would make strategic sense to identify examples of good practice to disseminate across the schools. If you feel that you could be involved in any of these projects , do make an entry on the relevant blog post . If you think you’ve been involved in a project which you think has made a difference to the student learning experience and has enhanced independent learning, please add your idea to this blog post, ideally leaving your contact details.

Thankyou.

Sharing Learning – how do we do it ?

Sharing learning is all down to us communicating our good ideas and practices with each other. This blog is an attempt to show how this ‘releasing potential’ project unfolds. It would be great to have your suggestions for projects we might seek to roll-out across the University, or your ideas on the work we’re doing. Just contribute to the posts on the blog.
